Hand Dug Well Part 1

This is the first chronicle of my attempt to hand did a small irrigation well on my place here in Montana. I am using a 6" auger post hole digger available at most hardware stores. The cost of having it dug is about $2100 so this is in part an attempt to save money and part because I love to see if I can do stuff like this on my own. I am not encouraging you to undertake such a project but if you are I hope my experiences might provide you some insight. The difficult conditions of my soil might not translate to yours. If your water is within 20 feet of the surface I see no reason this could not be accomplished as a project of your own. Know your own laws and limitations. Having looked at and experimented with a sand-point I think this is better. Larger casing means more water to draw from and so far I have been able to get through soil that would have crushed the sand-point anyway.
NOTE: In the end I used a sandpoint by driving it down my casing. Having pre dug the hole made that process much easier AND more importantly I have easy access to the top of the well should I need to get back into it.
Hey I wrote a book, a book about zombies. What can I say I love me a good zombie apocalypse story. You can get it on Kindle, check it out? I would love some feedback and maybe if you liked it could you help me out a leave a review..

the area of an good enough groundwater supply is the first step in constructing a hand dug nicely. if the water source is contaminated or no longer considerable sufficient to support use then the properly will quickly turn out to be deserted. there are limitless nicely documented technologically superior techniques for locating groundwater along with: far off sensing, gravity and magnetic techniques (such as aerogravity and aeromagnetic surveys), seismic, electric, electromagnetic, and radioactive strategies. but, these methods are usually luxurious and do not pertain to situations where hand dug wells are meant. the place of other floor water resources is a key indicator of groundwater. if floor water resources exist then it is first-class to use the topography of the land to decide an appropriate properly place. if no different surface water assets are gift, then topographic maps of the location are the fine method for finding groundwater. if those are not to be had and can't be with ease created then the next first-rate method is to look in which previous wells have been built. while the usage of this technique the already built properly need to be tested for its recharge price to examine that the groundwater supply is ample sufficient for a second nicely. the lifestyles of a previous well also opens the opportunity to test the groundwater for infection. if the original well has been deserted then there must be warning earlier than building a 2d. the aquifer recharge price ought to be determined in addition to checking out for any infection that would have lead to the nicely's closure. strategies for this are designated underneath.
